Aston vs Graveley
Aston finish runners up in opening day fixture
An fine all round performance ended in defeat against tough as ever Graveley.
Aston won the toss and captain for the day (Jez Hull) decided to bat first. A
steady start against quick bowling took the gloss of the new ball and after the
openers departed, Jason Burns (52) and Matt Wallis (35) built a
partnership of quality and style, taking Aston to 98 runs from 28 overs. From
then on wickets started to tumble as the bowlers
found their length. Graham Hull managed to hang around for a handy 15 but Aston
finished on 138 for 9.
Aston's limited bowling attack faired very well at the start of the home
teams reply. Matt Wallis sent down some beauties to restrict Graveley to around
the 70 run mark for 5 at 20 overs. From then on however, Graveley skipper
Bracey (46) and No3 Brown (62) saw them home to a comfortable victory. But
a good team performance - good bowling and spirited support from all the
fielders against what is traditionally a tough opposition. Special praise to
Nigel Cant for playing through the pain barrier after injuring himself in the
line of duty in the field.
Astons man of the match
Matt Wallis - fine all round performance
Champaign moment
Either Pete Briars's catch at square leg or Graveley's leg spinner's (called
Shane!) first ball to Eddie O'Hanlon. - It turned a mile and got the expected
expletive from the batsman.
