Aston vs Whitewell

Aston had to settle for second best for the second week in a row against a formidable Whitwell team.

The home team elected to bat first in a 40 over match. Tight opening bowling from Eddie O'Hanlon and Mike Hurry restricted them to just 66 runs from 20 overs. Despite a fine spell of bowling from young Richard Falder, Whitwell's batters soon found their form and managed to finish their 40 overs on a respectable 222 for 9. Whitwell’s top scorers were Middleton (41) and Rushurst (40 n.o.)  Aston's veteran, Mike Wallis, was the star in the field taking 3 catches whilst fielding at short square leg, then took up duties behind the stumps and managed an impressive stumping to give Colin Parker an unlikely first wicket of the season.

After a splendid tea (including some wonderful bacon and egg sandwiches) Aston set about their reply. An intimidating spell of pace bowling from Whitwell's opening bowler, Tanner, on an unfriendly track soon had the Aston top order back in the pavilion. Wickets continued to fall regularly without any batters managing to build a partnership. Graham Hull tried to take the game to them by notching a quick fire 25 but unfortunately Aston couldn't hold out and finished on a lowly 74 all out.

So two defeats against two of the strongest opponents we'll meet all season. Some promising performances, not least from the Falder boys. Here's to next weeks match against Pirton (away).

Aston's man of the match:

Richard Falder - a good spell of bowling just when the batsmen were getting going.

Champaign moment:

Could have gone to Richard too, for taking a sharp delivery right where it hurts most, but he's too young for champaign so I suppose Doc Wallis bags it for one of his catches - taking like a spring chicken in old roosters feathers.
