Aston vs Pirton

Aston notch their first victory of the season against Pirton.

Two evenly matched teams on a blustery but warm sunny afternoon in the Hertfordshire countryside made for a splendid cricket match. Captain Jez Hull, won the toss and elected to bat. A solid 2nd wicket partnership between Ed O'Hanlon(37) and Jason Burns(36) gave Aston a base to build on  and finished with a steady 159 for 9 at the tea interval. Debutant Paul Edwards (the Kettering Kipper), pitched in with a quick fire 17 runs. Mick O'Hanlon held the tail together with a determined 17 runs as well and Nick Brown made a classy looking 12 not out. Pirton's pick of the bowlers was rugger player Mitchell, taking 4 wickets for 29 off 7 overs.

Another commendable tea (including smoked salmon canapés!) and live coverage of Arsenal's season coming to an inglorious close was followed by Pirton's response to Aston's batting.  Mike Hurry bowled a very tight, aggressive line and length and caused Pirton all sorts of problems as they sought to get the scoreboard moving. Pirton's opening pair managed respectable scores, with 'keeper Bright making 24 and Newman another 24, but there after only one team looked like winning. Adam Doe started the inroad into their line-up as he bowled a breathless (he was gasping for a fag) 6 overs taking 2 for 20 runs. Wickets fell regularly with every bowling change - 6 different bowlers claimed at least 1 scalp as Aston eased to an eventually comfortable 70 run victory.

A fine victory and a fine all round performance sent the visiting team home in good heart for the rest of the season after a tough start.

Man of the Match:

Mike Hurry for his quality bowling performance. The partnership between Ed O'Hanlon and Jason Burns set up the victory but it was Mike Hurry's bowling that was the difference between the teams.

Champaign moment:

Adam Doe's catch taken with his back to play as the ball was sailing over his head towards mid wicket. It summed up the afternoon's performance.

Many thanks to Pirton for switching the fixture to their ground at short notice.
